Tinnitus sufferers are currently referred to an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist (ENT), by their General Practitioner (GP). If no medical or physical cause is found, patients are usually told there is no treatment or cure available. Some patients are offered a range of devices that may or may not help, such as hearing aids or tinnitus maskers.
Currently the best available option for relief and improvement of quality of life is Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. This has been well-researched and is accepted as an evidence-based best practice for coping and adaptation, but there is no cure, which is disheartening for patients and providers.
The number of young people suffering from tinnitus in the western world has doubled in recent years, mainly due to wearing in-ear buds and exposure to noise in nightlife, festivals and concerts.
Scientific research on tinnitus is still in its infancy. There is a huge need for financial resources in brain science related to tinnitus.
